Incidents

An incident is something that happened: an injury, an accident, damage, an event on the premises.

It is not a complaint and not a conduct record

• An incident is an event. A child fell in the playground.
• A conduct record is about a student's behaviour.
• A concern is something somebody raised that the school must answer.

They are separate because they are read by different people for different reasons, and because a school asked later about an accident needs the accident, not a complaint about it.

Recording one

As soon as you can, while you remember it. What happened, where, when, who was involved, what was done.

Record it even if it seemed minor and was dealt with. The value of an incident log is that it is complete; a log of only the serious ones cannot show a pattern.

What happens next

Depending on category and severity, it may notify people automatically. Anything involving injury or child safety should also be raised with the appropriate person directly — a record is not an alarm.
